JMP Securities questions if Ellison might want to take Oracle private

After Oracle reported better than expected Q3 results and guided to as reported revenue growth in Q4 that was below the consensus, JMP Securities analyst Patrick Walravens cited "a number of factors" that make him wonder whether Larry Ellison "might be slowly moving toward taking Oracle private." Among them he lists the company's aggressive share buybacks, which he notes are driving Ellison's beneficial ownership of the common stock higher as a percentage of the class; the fact that several industry sources have recently told him Ellison is more engaged now than he has been in several years; and Ellison's remarks in 2015 about how "brilliant" Michael Dell and Jim Davidson were for taking Dell private and then buying EMC. Despite his questioning about whether Ellison would like to take Oracle private, Walravens maintain a Market Perform rating on Oracle shares.
